The Black Sand Beach (Playa Negrita/Negra) coast is beautifully untamed. Areas on the island like Monte Pirata are volcanic and some of this amazing volcanic material is washed down through a quebrada during heavy rains which ends up at this beach on the island.
Finding the beach is difficult. There is a small entryway on Hwy 201, near the art gallery. Look for the small blue spray painted words 'Playa Negra'. The map above shows the location of the entrance. You will walk down a hill through a trail for about 10 minutes. It can fill up with water during rainy times, so bring your water shoes or sandals.
Once you get to the beach, head to your right, to get to the areas with the darkest sand.
"Once we finally found the entrance (couldn't find it on our first trip), it was awesome! Very cool sand, nice view of the water, neat cliffs, and very secluded. A must see!"
"'If you have a strict budget but still want to experience the clear waters and white sand. Then Rico Beach Resort is for you. The place may not look like much but still the beach will pay it all off. Just don't expect anything from the resort just expect that the beach is surely worth it.'
